Odysseus, king of Ithaca, was probably on of the greatest warriors in the history of Ancient Greece. It is said that the poet, Homer, wrote the story of the Odyssey. In this story, Odysseus and his crew are trying to make their voyage back home to Ithaca after they have fought with the Trojans. During the long journey, Odysseus will show some of his character traits which include his bravery, cleverness, and wisdom that will assist him with the situations he encounters on his journey home. Bravery was probably one of the traits Odysseus was known for best. Without his bravery, the story most-likely wouldn't have been as exciting and suspenseful as it was. One of the situations that displayed this trait was when they landed on the land of the Cyclopes. As they wandered around the land, they found a cave. In the cave were livestock and a shelf with cheese laying on it. Odysseus's shipmates wanted to take all of the livestock and cheese back to their boat and sail off. Odysseus disagreed to this and wanted to see the person that lived in the cave. This showed his bravery knowing that there was a chance that him and his crew members were going to put themselves in danger. Another situation that displayed his bravery was when Circe told Odysseus that in order to reach his way back home he must speak with the blind prophet , Tiresias, in the land of the dead. Importance of Character in Homer's Odyssey

 

Odyssey, by Homer, is about Odysseus, the king of Ithaca.  Odysseus fights in the Trojan War and wins.  He travels towards Ithaca but does not reach it because he is not in favor of Poseidon, god of the sea, who prevents his return.  For many years, Odysseus wanders the seas and has many adventures.  Meanwhile, suitors attempt to marry Penelope, Odysseus' wife, but she remains faithful to her husband.  The gods pity Odysseus and assist in his safe return to Ithaca.             Another quality that enables Odysseus to return home and restore his kingdom is self-discipline.  Menelaus gives one testimony to his self-discipline.  He tells Telemachus, Odysseus' son, about Odysseus' army that hid inside a wooden horse.  The horse was taken inside the enemy walls of Troy.  Everyone inside the horse wanted to say something but Odysseus was patient and did not say anything, nor did he let anyone else say a word.  Anticles would have said a word, according to Menalaus, but "Odysseus held his two hands tight over the man's mouth, and saved the whole nation" (line #).  Odysseus made the plan of the wooden horse successful with his self-discipline.  Another example of Odysseus's discipline is shown when he meets Nausicaa.  Odysseus is caught in a storm at sea and undergoes much suffering until Athena and a sea nymph help him
