ETHICS IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE ADMINSTRATION ANALYSIS 3 Good character, courage, integrity, responsibility, and honesty are words used to describe a person with ethics. Criminal justice employees should represent the highest level of ethical conduct on or off duty.

on to real world ethics has to come from management. If they really want an ethical organization, police managers have to take a long look in the mirror and decide to hold themselves to an even higher standard than

they do their personnel”.

Integrity is essential to successful human understanding as it can label an agency, an institution or a person. Integrity is a gauge for competence, confidence, trust, and  professionalism. Criminal justice administrators must ensure that their officers understand, and follow integrity as it could possibly damage the reputation of the entire police force. On or off duty the behavior of one officer reflects positively or negatively on the administrator. The nature of ethics and the role it can play within the criminal justice system can be referring as The Law Enforcement Code of Ethics. According to Police Codes (2012), As

Criminal justice professionals, “it is their fundamental duty to serve mankind; to safeguard lives

and property; to protect the innocent against deception, the weak against oppression or intimidation, and the peaceful against violence or disorder; and to respect the Constitutional

rights of all men to liberty, equality and justice” (Law Enforcement Code of Ethics).

Critical thinking plays a large role in regard to the relationship of ethics and professional  behavior. It is a main component when deciding whether a claim is true or false. Critical thinking is a learned skill which must be practiced, and portrayed on a professional level. During the critical thinking process, the officer must remember his or her professional ethics as this will aid him or her in making the correct decision.

Criminal Justice professionals make decisions everyday and they have to be able to recognize when an issue involves ethical considerations. Therefore, in order to recognize these issues and make appropriate and correct decisions, it is important that the criminal justice professional study ethics. In order to make a good ethical decision the professional will have to have the ability to apply knowledge of ethics, know the ethical terminology and the concepts needed in making a good ethical decision. Criminal Justice professionals are in positions of power and exercise power and authority over others. Whereas, an ethical piece of policy would involve a reasoned and considered analysis of a particular issue and a rational and informed approach. Education and training in ethics will make it possible for those criminal justice professionals in the capacity of making policy decision formulate an ethical policy (Pollock 24). Therefore, if the professional does not have an ethical framework to draw upon, the professional will have to rely on emotions, instinct, and personal values. Emotions, instinct, and personal values cannot supply adequate answers to ethical and moral dilemmas. However, training and education can provide the answers to solve those ethical and moral dilemmas, increase awareness of ethical issues, expand the scope of their ethical vision, and spur their imagination of the consequences of their decisions affecting others. Training will provide the formation of questions on which to base an ethical decision. Does the decision affect others? Does the decision hurt others? Would “I” want it done if “I” were on the other side? Would “I” be proud of the decision if made public? These are just some of the issues covered by the study of ethics. Most of all it is important for criminal justice professionals to study ethics to sensitize them to ethical issues and provide tools to help identify and resolve the
